A local, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, providing “Community Impact” and “Economic Empowerment” in partnership with health and human service organizations within our local community. We provide resource support through year round individual and corporate investment, and an annual community fund-raising campaign. The investment and campaign dollars are allocated to our local partner agencies as well as designated to other regional United Way partners. We also administer the Johnson City-Mountain Home Combined Federal Campaign, the Heisse Johnson Keeping Warm Fund, and the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Programs of FEMA. (423) 282-5682. Provides a safe and comfortable, mentally and physically stimulating atmosphere to enhance the quality of life, sense of independence, dignity, and selfworth, while protecting the safety of our elders and challenged adults. It is an alternative to premature, unnecessary institutional confinement by providing daily supervised care for the elderly, handicapped, and those who require special attention due to physical, mental, or emotional limitations, or frailty due to advanced age. Adults who experience impairment and diminishing health can maintain an enhanced quality of life and feeling of self-worth, while allowing family members some peace of mind and the ability to continue with their own lives. National and international in scope but local in action, the Red Cross provides 24-hour relief for families in any disaster including single family fires; 24-hour emergency communication for military personnel and their families; health and safety training such as First Aid, CPR, AED Training, and Water Safety. Disaster Preparedness for the community and for individuals is an essential Red Cross Service. Red Cross supports the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and through them provide international tracing and an international message service. Provides services to boys and girls ages 6-18. The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to inspire all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize
their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The club meets this mission by providing facilities and programming that promote: Character & Leadership, Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills, The Arts, and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. (423) 461-4560

Coalition For Kids is a faith-based, non-profit agency that began in 1998 as a grassroots effort in one of the lowest income, highest crime areas in Johnson City. Local business leaders and concerned citizens envisioned a safe environment where the children and youth of this community could gather for academic assistance and enrichment activities. Since opening our doors in March of 1999, the Coalition has grown from one site serving 25 students to partnerships with Johnson City Schools and the Johnson City Housing Authority that enabled us to expand to seven sites serving more than 400 children a day. Through a comprehensive telephone helpline, trained volunteers offer empathetic listening, crisis intervention, reassurance calls to people who are elderly and/or disabled, and information and referral to health, human, and social service agencies utilizing the new 2-1-1 abbreviated dialing code. CONTACT provides answering services for Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics, and Overeater’s Anonymous. CONTACT can be reached for service seven days a week at (423) 926-0144, or simply dial 2-1-1.

Provides in-home assistance to prevent the premature, institutional placement of elderly, handicapped, or special-needs adults who are identified by Department of Human Services, Adult Protective Services, as being in threat of physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. Family Support assistants provide protective supervision and help teach and perform homemaking skills, household management, grocery and household shopping, personal care, cooking, nutritional instruction, and budgeting. Many referred adults have few or no family who can help them maintain independence. Family Support encourages some self-sufficiency while improving the client’s dignity and self-worth. Children & Youth services in the Johnson City area provide evaluation and treatment of all child and adolescent behavioral disorders and substance abuse day treatment counseling
through Frontier Health’s Adventure Program. The Greenwood Challenge Ropes Course teaches youth teamwork and builds inner confidence through specially designed group activities. Frontier Health is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization specializing in mental health, family violence, intellectual and developmental disabilities, vocational rehabilitation, recovery, and substance abuse services. Girl Scouts is an organization dedicated solely to girls where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives — like strong values, a social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and selfworth. The Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council, Inc. mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. (423) 929-8185

An agency providing recreational/educational opportunities for girls ages 6-16. Programs delivered by trained personnel are in Life Skills, Cultural Enrichment, Health & Sexuality, Careers, Social Recreation, Leadership & Community Action, and Sports & Adventure. Girls Incorporated provides an environment where girls can interact with peers, acquire new skills, build relationships with adults who understand their needs, and become strong, smart, and successful. Enabling Religious Congregations to Unite Hearts & Hands to Provide Shelter, Meals, & Services for Homeless Families with Children. An established network of congregations and community agencies that provide a community, faith response to homeless families with children. Congregations provide temporary food and shelter for families, allowing them to remain as a family. Case management connects families to community services that address
specific and unique needs of each family. The eventual goal is to help families move into permanent, affordable housing. I.H.N. also provides local congregations an opportunity to put their faith into action. (423) 929-9967

Shoes are provided by the Shoe Fund for children of Johnson City families who can’t afford them so they may attend school on a regular basis. (423) 434-5223

Provides free basic dental care to adults whose income level falls below the poverty level as defined by federal poverty level guidelines. The primary goal is the prevention of pain and dental disease by providing oral exams, dental extractions, basic restorations, dental cleanings, and preventive oral hygiene education. (423) 232-7919

Headquartered in Johnson City, the council serves more than 4,000 boys, girls, and adult members in Washington County through chartered partners. Scouting impacts our community in many ways — including helping to feed the hungry and programs for at-risk children. The
mission is to serve others by helping instill values in young people and prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime. (423) 952-6961

Working to Help People with Disabilities Contribute the Fullness of their Being to the Wealth of Human Community Dedicated to providing support services for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In-home and center-based respite provides parents and families a break from day-to-day stress involved with caring for a family member who has a developmental disability. (423) 928-9362

Motivated by a love of God to meet the needs of humanity, the Salvation Army cares for area needy by providing basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter, as well as promoting spiritual, moral, and physical well-being. (423) 926-2102

Washington County Schools has approximately 9,000 K-12 students in 14 schools. Washington County Coordinated School Health has developed programs that improve the quality of life for all students. Fit For Success, formerly known as Fit To Be Tied, is an integral program that provides shoes, clothing, and food to needy students.
